Double Chocolate Coconut Whipped Cream (My Starbucks Version)

Healthy whipped cream?! Yes. We all know that indulgent Starbucks chocolate whipped cream they put on top of some of their frappuccinos right? Well, make this and tell me this doesn’t blow your mind! It did mine! I also made it to dip my Dark Chocolate Espresso Biscotti in!

Before I became vegan, my dairy whipped cream was pretty popular amongst family and friends. I always made whipped cream homemade for dishes for people. However, this much healthier version seriously stands up to it, big time! You can also make my Shot glass truffles with this amazing whipped cream!

It is healthy too…certainly way healthier than traditional whipped cream and is so easy! This can be a great party idea as a fruit dip, as I did here on this gorgeous platter.

I use coconut “cream” and it is divine. I’ve seen coconut whipped cream plenty of times, but usually just as plain white cream, which is delicious, but I’m a chocoholic! I added my own twist after thinking back to the yummy Starbucks chocolate whipped cream they put on some of their frappuccinos. (Particularly their cookie crumble frappe)

Did you know that the whipped cream on top of the cookie crumble frappe contains 12g of fat alone…not even including the drink?!! That’s just for the small amount you get as well. While there is fat in coconut milk, it is a healthy fat.

I swear, other than the very slight hint of coconut, it tastes the same! I used dark cocoa, a must, and added mini chocolate chips and OH MY, I was in heaven!

Recipe: ย Makes about 1 1/2 cups

Gluten Free

1 can full fat coconut milk-only using the cream at the top of the can (I got mine at Whole Foods)

1 tablespoon dark cocoa (dark cocoa is a must to achieve the intense Starbucks chocolate flavor-I use Hershey’s special dark-see link for gluten free info)

1 tablespoon evaporated cane juice (or coconut sugar-adjust sweetner to your preference)

1/2-3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (use gluten free if necessary)

1 tablespoon mini vegan gluten free chocolate chips (optional-I use Enjoy Life brand)

Place the can in the fridge for several hours or overnight, this will help it to thicken. When you remove the can, do NOT shake it. All the cream is sitting at the top of the can. I accidentally dropped my can before placing it in the fridge, so it probably would have been a lot thicker at the top normally. In fact, mine looked just like regular liquid cream you’d buy at the store. However, don’t worry, the whipping and cocoa will thicken it up beautifully, as you can see in the photos. Depending on how thick your cream is, your whipping time could vary. Rest assured though, it will thicken.

When you remove the lid, it will look like this. Just carefully scoop out all the white cream into a bowl and once you get to the watery part, stop scooping. (save the extra liquid for this blueberry smoothie or use as the liquid in baking desserts) Depending on your can (they vary) and brand, you may need to adjust the sweetner or cocoa depending on how much cream you have. I didn’t measure mine but I got about a 1/2 cup of cream.

With an electric mixer, begin beating on low speed and gradually progress to high speed. After you’ve whipped the cream for about 5-8 minutes, it should look like this. Again, depending on how thick your cream was to begin with, the whipping time may vary. Mine took this long since I dropped my can before placing it in the fridge. Once it has begun to thicken like in the above photo, add the cocoa, sugar and vanilla.

Whip for a few more minutes until light and fluffy with ribbons forming.

Thick, light and creamy….and chocolatey. Now, you can gently fold in the mini chocolate chips if using.

Look. At. That.

Place in the fridge to chill and firm up more, if desired, or using for a party. Serve with fruit, over a shake, on a cake….or just dive right in the bowl. ๐Ÿ™‚ I like the idea of using it as a fruit dip!

Me too! I’ve just had it as vanilla which is wonderful but I will look for any excuse to turn something into chocolate, haha! By using the dark cocoa, it really gives such an authentic chocolate flavor that makes it like the Starbucks version. ๐Ÿ™‚ Regular cocoa just doesn’t do it!
